How to Get Your Resume Through AI Screening Tools

Are you applying for numerous jobs online, but never landing an interview? If so, the issue may be that your resume is not passing the artificial intelligence (AI) screening tools. According to a Harvard Business School and Accenture survey as high as 75% of companies use this technology.

Many companies use AI tools to review all resumes submitted for job postings to determine which should be reviewed by human resource professionals. However, the tools often overlook qualified applicants who did not create their resume with the AI screening tools in mind. As job applicant, you should design your resume specifically with AI screen tools in mind.

Tips for increasing the chances of a human reading your resume:

Customize each resume for the specific job.

Because the AI screening tools are reviewing your resume to determine if you are a match for this specific job, you must review your resume and make changes for each job opening. If you use the same resume for all jobs, even those that are generally the same roles, you significantly increase the odds of being rejected by the AI screening tools.

Start with the job description.

Review the job description carefully and then update your resume to match the specific description. For example, if the description mentions supervisory experience, then make sure that your resume includes any teams that you led and management experience.

Focus on keywords.

Because screening tools are often looking for specific keywords in resumes, make sure that all important terms from the job description are used in your resume. For example, if the resume lists specific soft skills, such as communication or collaboration, make sure that these words are included on your resume.

Reduce formatting.

Many tools convert all resumes to .TXT files before reviewing. If you have graphics or formatting, this can make your resume challenging to read. To reduce issues, use only basic formatting, such as bold, italics and bullets on your resume.

Use the correct file format.

Before submitting your resume, check the file format requested on the instructions. If you submit a .DOC file instead of .PDF file or vis versa, then your resume may be rejected before it is ever even read.

By keeping the AI screening tools in mind when applying for jobs, you can increase the odds of making it to the first round of interviews. However, while you should follow the steps to help pass the AI screening tools, it’s easy to focus too much on the technological tools. Your goal with your resume is to pass the AI screen process and then have your resume resonate with the human HR professional on the other side of the tool.
