These Tips Will Help You Improve Your Mood at Work

Those of us who have to live through grey skies from December to April know – Seasonal Affected Disorder is real, and it is no joke.

On top of that, you have to deal with the daily grind of being a full-time professional. Even if you have a “dream job” – there are probably aspects of it that annoy you and the occasional bad day. Consider the fact that you spend around one-third of your week at work, it behooves you to have a good mood while you’re on the clock.

Below are a number of things you can do to boost your mood at work and give you that extra lift you need to get you through this last bit of winter.

Do a Favor

Doing a favor for someone else makes you feel good about yourself. It’s as simple as that, and at work – there’s no shortage of people around you that could use a helping hand. If you just spend five minutes helping out someone else, you not only get to feel better about yourself, you’ve also strengthened a bond with a co-worker, which can come in handy down the road.

Organize Your Work Area

Maybe it has something to do with the sense of accomplishment it brings but cleaning up your stuff and getting organized is another one of those things that just makes you feel better. Organizing your work area obviously can also make you more productive.

Take Regular Breaks to Chit-Chat

Research shows that the average person at work can only maintain focus for an hour or less. Therefore, it actually helps your productivity to get up occasionally and interact with your co-workers. Research also shows that people who like their co-workers have higher levels of job satisfaction, which is another reason to regularly get up and be social.

Drink Lots of Water

Instead of reaching for that cup of coffee the next time you need energy, grab a glass of water. Coffee can give you a much-needed boost, but it also comes with a crash and can exacerbate any personal anxiety.

Regularly drinking water, on the other hand, is a healthy habit for so many reasons, including mood support.

Listen to Music, Preferably Without Lyrics

Studies have shown that having music on in the background can actually boost productivity, but only if the music doesn’t have lyrics. That being said, if you are feeling like listening to instrumental jazz, classical or techno music, music with lyrics can still brighten your mood.

Set Simple, Relevant Goals

When you set goals, you give yourself a sense of purpose, and when you achieve goals, it gives you a sense of satisfaction – both of which can do wonders for your mood.
