Machine Floater
A Machine Floater is a versatile and skilled individual responsible for providing support and assistance across various functions within a machine shop. The role involves performing a range of tasks to ensure efficient operation, maintenance, and organization of the shop floor, contributing to the overall productivity and success of the manufacturing process.
Responsibilities
1. Equipment Operation: Operate a variety of machine shop equipment, such as lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC machines, as needed and based on skill level.
2. Setup and Tooling: Assist with machine setup and tooling changes, ensuring accurate calibration and alignment to meet production specifications.
3. Material Handling: Transport raw materials, workpieces, and finished parts within the shop using appropriate handling equipment, such as overhead cranes, forklifts, or manual methods.
4. Workpiece Inspection: Conduct basic quality checks on machined parts using measuring tools, gauges, and visual inspection to ensure adherence to required dimensions and tolerances.
5. Shop Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance tasks on machinery and work areas. Notify maintenance personnel of any equipment issues or abnormalities.
6. Inventory Management: Maintain an organized inventory of tools, supplies, and materials. Replenish stock as needed and assist in periodic inventory counts.
7. Assistance to Machinists: Collaborate with machinists and operators by providing support during machine setup, tool changes, and part loading/unloading, optimizing workflow efficiency.
8. Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and participating in safety meetings and training.
9. Problem Solving: Assist in troubleshooting and resolving minor technical issues that may arise during production, escalating complex problems to senior staff when necessary.
10. Documentation: Accurately record production data, measurements, and any relevant information in logs or digital systems.
11. Training and Skill Development: Continuously enhance skills and knowledge through on-the-job training, mentorship, and self-directed learning to progress within the machine shop environment.
12. Flexibility: Be adaptable and willing to perform various tasks or assist different departments as workload and priorities change.
Qualifications and Skills

High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in machining or related field is a plus.

Previous experience working in a machine shop or manufacturing environment preferred.

Proficiency in using machine shop tools, measuring instruments, and equipment.

Basic understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials.

Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
