Mentorship is one of the most rewarding aspects of professional growth. Whether you’re a mentor or a mentee, it’s all about fostering trust, learning from one another, and growing together. But let’s be honest — mentorship doesn’t just happen. Like all relationships, it takes effort and intentionality. While casual mentorships (both at work and in your personal life) can happen organically, naturally springing up from conversations over coffee or a shared experience, a formal mentorship is primarily focused on professional development and is far more intentional.
This type of mentorship is goal-oriented and hierarchical. It involves someone of lesser skill or knowledge seeking the wisdom and experience of someone a little (or a lot) farther along in their career or skill set.
Building a formal yet genuine connection that benefits both parties requires effort. However, it’s worth the effort! There are many advantages to mentorship for both mentees and mentors.
Mentees gain –
Mentors gain –
Furthermore, benefits surpass just those mentoring or those being mentored! A workplace that embraces, encourages, and creates mentorship opportunities will see strengthened relationships, greater collaboration, and a more authentic exchange of knowledge and skills.
Regardless of what “side of the table” you sit on, you can do some practical things to get the most out of a mentorship relationship.
Typically, a mentee initiates a mentorship by seeking out guidance for career growth, skill development, or personal growth. Finding the right mentor can feel intimidating. Here’s how you can make that first move with confidence:
Finding the right mentor is the first step. Do some research to learn about the person you’d like to approach. Look for someone whose experience, skills, and leadership style align with your expectations. Don’t be afraid to “think outside the box” and approach someone very different from yourself.
When you reach out (typically in a professional and concise email), let them know who you are and what you admire about them. Then, clearly articulate your goals and the precise ones you want to achieve. This helps demonstrate that you aren’t just looking for a new friend but seeking their help for tangible and measurable growth. Politely request an in-person conversation to discuss mentorship.
Let your desire to grow and your eagerness to draw wisdom from your mentor shine through. Let them know you’re committed!
Remember to respect your mentor’s time and boundaries. Be humble and teachable — willing to hear hard feedback. Be authentic— they are there to help you, so don’t make it harder by being dishonest about your questions, concerns, or frustrations. Follow through with the input, tips, and advice they give you. And always, always show gratitude for their help!
As a mentor, you have a tremendous opportunity to impact someone’s life significantly. Think about all the people who helped you get where you are today! Here are some ways to help your mentees along:
Trust is key. Make it clear that your mentee can share challenges or concerns without fear of judgment or that you will break their confidence. Make sure to practice active listening!
Help your mentee define clear, actionable goals, drawing from your own experience and knowledge of the industry and life. Measurable goals help you both see progress and know what success looks like.
In addition to setting a clear path for your mentee, create a clear plan for your mentorship journey with them. Let them know your boundaries, but be willing to adapt to the needs and personality of your mentee as needed. (Every mentee is different!)
It’s not always fun to receive feedback, nor is it always easy to dole it out. However, feedback is a gift when done correctly. Use a blend of affirmation or praise and actionable tips.
It takes a measure of vulnerability for someone to approach a mentor and ask for help — instead of acting like you have it all together and always have, be authentic and genuine. Share your growth journey, including your failures, to help your mentee. Strive to build trust and a genuine relationship with your mentee…you may be surprised at the fresh perspectives they have to offer!
