Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a never-ending enigma. And it’s even worse during the holidays.
As the end of Q4 rapidly approaches, your schedule may become unnavigable. School pageants and programs, holiday parties, shopping, baking, and decorating all play havoc with our calendars. There are Christmas cards to mail. Plus, the impending threat of Uncle Pat’s after-dinner political prattle promises added stress.
Thankfully, you’re not alone. But the question remains: how can you achieve a harmonious holiday work-life balance so you can still enjoy the season?
Here are some tips:
As much as you want to do everything, it’s impossible. After all, you’re human! Wisdom means choosing among the countless holiday events assaulting your calendar. Prioritize the things that matter most and bid farewell to the obligatory.
Be intentional about time blocking. Map out your scheduled events and projects, so you know where to intersperse your daily tasks. Monitor your calendar, then structure your days accordingly. Doing so will boost your confidence as you regain control of your time.
Setting boundaries is hard work! But it’s critical to a healthy work-life balance during the holidays. Be deliberate about not bringing work home with you. On the flip side, be fully present when you’re at work.
Additionally, consult your boss regarding the hours you are willing (or unwilling) to put in during the holiday season. Learn to set boundaries at home, too, and “be the boss” of your social calendar. Saying no—both professionally and socially—is OK!
Do yourself a favor and disconnect from social media and possibly from news in general. Pausing social media is fantastic for your mental health. Plus, it adds extra wiggle room to your daily schedule. You might be surprised how much time we all waste scrolling!
Don’t forget self-care! You can’t run full steam ahead on an empty tank. You’ll accomplish more at work and home if you let your mind and body recharge when needed.
Above all, manage your holiday expectations and be flexible. Not everything will look the way you planned it . . . and that’s all right! The unexpected will happen; the only thing to do is roll with it! Laugh off life’s little mishaps so you can bypass stress-induced misery and have the Merry Christmas you really want!
